The XLS file format is implemented by older versions of Microsoft Excel for its output spreadsheet documents, though newer versions of Microsoft Excel, such as Microsoft Excel 2007 and Microsoft Excel 2012, are also integrated with support for opening, editing and creating XLS files. The content of an XLS document normally includes statistical and numerical pieces of data that are labeled with text. Graphics or images can also be embedded into the cells, rows and columns of an .xls spreadsheet. Mathematical equations and other functions for computing numerical data or statistics are also provided as among the integrated features of Microsoft Excel. VB Scripting through macros can also be done with an XLS spreadsheet. Formatting attributes and other layout elements may be implemented into new XLS spreadsheets by using XLT files, which are commonly known as Excel templates. Microsoft Excel also has a version for Mac platforms. XLS files can also be opened using Microsoft Notepad or Wordpad.
