PACK files are categorized as Encoded Files developed by Oracle. They are called Pack200 Packed Jar Files because they refer to files created using the Pack200 utility; a tool that belongs to the Java 1.5.0 and a tool used to compress .JAR files. PACK files are also known to contain JAR files with up to sixty percent compression rate and these files are used by Java Web Start clients for the retrieval and unpacking of JAR files for Java programs. Aside from being compressed into .PACK.GZ files often, PACK files are also associated with ".jar.pack" extension compound.
