BAK is an extension used to signify a backup copy of a file. This common .BAK naming scheme makes it possible to retrieve the original contents of the file. Similarly, a user may also manually make a copy of the file before the change and append .BAK to the file-name. There are several applications that produce BAK files as part of their auto-save procedure. Periodically, you may want to search for BAK files and delete old ones.
