What is a shx file and how do I open a shx file?
The SHX file extension was developed by Autodesk and is listed under the AutoCAD Compiled Shape File type and categorized as a CAD file. Files created by the AutoCAD software in 2D and 3D engineering and design application are compiled shape files. It consists of font definitions as well as shape definitions for displaying custom text. It also supports various Type 1 PostScript fonts and can also be used to store fonts and small building blocks that are usually inserted in drawings. The SHX extension files can be compiled as .PFB font files and .SHP shape files. Once compiled, the produced SHX file extension can then be inserted into the drawing which enables the user to identify the scale, rotation and location of the imported shape file. Programs that are capable of opening SHX file extensions include Autodesk AutoCAD 2013, ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and Motorola RSD Lite.
