KAP files are files that are used by nautical chart reading programs; which is why they are known as BSB Chart Image Files. KAP files contain cartographic information saved in a text format and they can also contain encoded raster images saved in the binary format. These files can also store a simple ASCII text file and since these files contain nautical charts, they are mainly used by GIS programs that are used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other organizations that perform nautical chart reading tasks.
