What is a ly file and how do I open a ly file?
These are files known as LilyPond Files developed by GNU. Lilypond is a popular application for creating musical scores, allowing users to produce their desired music of the highest quality. When Lilypond is used to create sheet music, the input files it creates are known as LY files as they are affixed with the .ly extension. LY files have a header that contains the title of the music, the composer, and a musical score wherein the scores contain the time, clef and the key as well as note lists and durations. LY files can be edited by any text editor since they are saved in a text format and with the use of the Lilypond program, they can also be made to become compositions that can be printed. Lilypond is free so anybody can download it and create musical sheets with it. LY files can also be opened with Lilypond in both Windows and MAC operating systems.
