What is a maf file and how do I open a maf file?
Text files that are created using the Mutation Annotation Format are called MAF files. These files are developed by National Cancer Institute and are mainly known as Mutation Annotation Format Files. The MAF format refers to the format that captures cell mutations. MAF files save information regarding cell and genome with the use of a tab-delimited text. These files help a lot in cancer studies because they are used to capture somatic mutations and single-nucleotide polymorphism. The National Cancer Institute and the National Human Genome Research Institute maintains this MAF format and uses this for The Cancer Genome Atlas project. Since these files contain mutation information, it is truly helpful in custom research analysis and since they come as text files, they can be viewed and edited using any text editor such as Notepad or Wordpad. The MAF format has been revised a lot of times already wherein 32 different tab-delimited columns are supported by version 2.2.
