What is a nessus file and how do I open a nessus file?
The NESSUS is a file extension known as Nessus Network Security Scanner File which was developed by Tenable Network Security. Nessus is a network vulnerability scanning application. Specifically, the data file format saves the results of a network security scan as well as the policies used for the performed scan. It enables the results from corporate or home network scans to be saved and imported for review. NESSUS files use XML formatting which means it is XML internally. It was introduced in Nessus 3.2, the reference format for the future. It contains the full context of the scan -- the actual policy used, the plugin set used, the list of the targets, and others. An updated .nessus file format (.nessus v2) is now available, for easier scan, import and export report data. Descriptions can now be split into different labels such as CVSS base scores, risk factors and more. Files in NESSUS format can be opened with Tenable Network Security Nessus in Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS platforms.
