The Corel WordPerfect Office X6 application can be used to open and view the content of files with the .wp4 extension. These WP4 files are word documents which can be created by using WordPerfect 4.X, an older version of the WordPerfect program that was originally developed for the Microsoft DOS (Disk Operating System) platform. This WordPerfect application version was the first WordPerfect distribution that offered features to automatically add paragraph numbers to a document. At the time WordPerfect 4.x was released, it quickly became a more popular word processing application for the Microsoft DOS environment, even outdoing WordStar, another word processing application for the Microsoft DOS platform. The versions of WordPerfect that can open and view the content of these WP4 documents are versions 4 and newer ones. Since the text formatting elements and page layout options integrated into WordPerfect 4 were quite limited compared to newer versions of the WordPerfect program, the WPD format (used by WordPerfect Office X6) is a preferred WordPerfect document format over the WP4 format.
